There are times in life where you've just got to be bold. I've written previously about being brave enough to use colour in our homes, but introducing pattern and print to your home requires next-level bravery.

rlene McIntyre of Ventura Design says, "Prints can add so much personality and movement to a space." However, there are a few rules worth following. "When using a print, I always first consider the size of the room. Understanding your proportions and scale is everything when it comes to using print. Personally, I reach for smaller prints for a smaller room and always feel better about using larger prints in a larger space."

Pattern reflects the symmetry that we see in nature. I adore nature and wildlife but I've never fully committed to an animal-print fabric on furniture in my home, despite the fact there is plenty of it hanging in my wardrobe.

Instead, what I like to do is experiment with it and introduce it occasionally via throws and scatter cushions. I inevitably tire of these, so this is an inexpensive and non-committed way of injecting it into my space. One piece I have committed to is a large square painting on canvas of two zebras embracing, which hangs proudly in my living room and acts as a lively injection of monochrome print against a colourful backdrop of books.

Another easy way to incorporate print without it overpowering your design scheme is to add a graphic rug. Arlene says: "I love throwing in a patterned rug if I feel a space needs a little more edge or definition. And I always love introducing printed fabrics on armchairs, backs of dining chairs, scattered cushions, etc."

Look out for large-scale geometric rugs for modern styling or layer up a few smaller rugs for pattern underfoot. Just make sure you have a common colour thread in the patterns to hold the scheme together.

And remember, you don't have to go with big, brash prints. Pattern can also be subtle and delicate and layering smaller prints with bigger, bolder ones can tie a room together, adding dimension and depth.

Get the balance of colour, pattern and texture just right and you'll have a breathtaking signature interior.
